India generates approximately 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste each year, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. This number is expected to increase to 165 million tonnes by 2030.
India is one of the largest producers of electronic waste in the world. According to a report by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, India generated 3.2 million metric tons of e-waste in 2019, and this figure is expected to double by 2030. The lack of proper disposal mechanisms is leading to severe environmental and health hazards.
India is also facing a severe plastic waste problem. The country generates around 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste per day, and only about 60% of this is collected and recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, water bodies, and oceans, leading to severe environmental damage. India has a large informal recycling sector for both electronic and plastic waste. However, this sector has several challenges, including poor working conditions, low wages, and a lack of proper safety measures. Additionally, there is a need for formalized e-waste and plastic waste collection and recycling mechanisms.
